Finding the Perfect Acne Cleanser for Your Skin Type

With so many products available for acne treatment, how do I know which will work best for me?

The first step is deciding what type of skin you have. The three basic types are oily, combination, or dry. It should be easy to determine which category you fall into.

Once you have decided what skin type you have you can start looking at acne soap products. I will go over my top pick for each category.

For oily skin:

Proactiv uses a 3-step program that is ideal for oily skin. The cleanser contains benzoyl peroxide, a known acne fighter. The upside is the 60 day guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the product, you can return it for a full refund. The downside is that Proactiv is famous for being extremely drying. However, this may not be a problem if your skin is oily. Proactiv will run you around $29.95 per month.

For combination skin:

You definitely want a cleanser that will neither over-dry nor over-moisturize. It is always best to go with a middle of the road cleanser such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Cetaphil is gentle because it’s main ingredient is water. It also contains a number of alcohol by-products including Stearyl Alcohol. This cleanser is highly recommended by dermatologists. Cetaphil will cost around $11 a bottle.

For dry skin:

I recommend Philosophy Purity Made Simple. This product is ph-balanced to remove grime and cosmetics and deep cleaning your pores at the same time. As with all philosophy products Purity Made Simple will soothe even the driest of skin. It contains Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, which works as a surfactant to cleanse without irritation. Purity Made Simple can be found online at Sephora for around $20 a bottle.

Remember the most important thing about fighting your acne is consistently cleansing your skin with an acne soap made for your skin type. It takes time so always stick with any acne treatment for at least four to six weeks before trying something new. Be consistent. Use the right products. In addition, you will be well on your way to clear, healthy skin.
