Three Tips for Removing Blackheads in the Ears

Blackheads in the ears are not only visually unpleasant, but can also be very painful. Even though these black bumps are unsightly, they are practically harmless and will not interfere with the ability to hear.

Blackheads are formed with the sebaceous (skin oil) glands produce excessive amounts of oil. Overproduction of oil leads to the clogging of the follicles or pores. The oil then mixes with dead skin cells and forms a hardened plug; when this plug gets exposed to the air, it takes on the black color. In order to prevent blackheads from forming, it’s important to make sure 1)the skin is clear of oil and 2)dead skin cells are properly sloughed off.

Getting rid of blackheads in the ear is a little different from removing them anywhere else on the body because of the awkward location. Most people find that they are a little harder to remove. The following are a few blackhead removal tips that you can apply to eliminate those blackheads quickly.

1. Use a warm compress. Create a compress by dampening a flannel cloth with warm water. Apply the compress to the blackheads with slight pressure for 10-15 minutes. Once the steam from the compress opens up the pores, you can gently scrape the blackhead away with a clean pair of tweezers. If using tweezers is too awkward, try using a small hairpin.

2. Exfoliate. You can also loosen blackheads by using an exfoliant to break up dead skin cells. To apply to the ears, dip a cotton swab in the exfoliating agent of your choice (salicylic acid works very well) and gently scrub inside of the ear.

3. Squeezing. Squeezing a blackhead is generally not recommended since it may lead to infection and scarring. However, if you absolutely need to squeeze to get rid of a blackhead quickly, never use your fingers or fingernails. Use sterilized tweezers instead…if using tweezers is a bit awkward, solicit help from a friend or family member to remove the blackhead for you.
