Trigger Avoidance as a Form of Rosacea Treatment

We are so accustomed to taking a pill as the solution to all our health problems that the idea of behavior avoidance or behavior modification may seem like a quaint solution instead of a real remedy to our problems. Without discounting the very legitimate use of prescription rosacea medication and natural rosacea treatment, it’s crucial to understand how you can “treat” your rosacea by virtue of avoiding certain behaviors and exposure to certain environmental conditions that will increase the severity of your skin condition.

Let’s look at 5 triggers right now that should be on the mind of everyone with rosacea. According to the Rosacea Treatment Guide, these are very common triggers for most people who have this skin disorder.

The first one is cold wind. Having cold wind blow up in your face can immediately cause a negative reaction. It’s hard to avoid wind if you are outside, so the easiest solution is to stay indoors. However, if you do venture out, bring a scarf and something else such as a wide brim hat or even an umbrella. Don’t be ashamed to do what you have to do outdoors to avoid having the wind hit you in the face.

The second one is similar to the first but in a very different way. I’m talking about exposure to sun. Fortunately it’s a bit easier to work with the sun than it is cold wind. Obviously, not being exposed is again the best solution but you can protect yourself with sunscreen, a hat, scarves, an umbrella, and full length clothing. If you’ve never used sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, this is definitely something to try, as many people with rosacea report success with this method in minimizing sun exposure.

The third trigger is one that catches many off guard – intense cardiovascular exercise. How does this trigger your rosacea problems? Well, when engaged in intense exercise like running on a treadmill or doing aerobics, the body heats up. This internal heat is the problem. The solution? Moderate your exercise. Slow things down to a pace that is definitely not intense.

The fourth and fifth triggers relate to what we put in our body: food and alcohol. There are a thousand different varieties of food that can possibly act as a trigger. This is something you’ll have to learn for yourself by taking pains to note what foods you’re ingesting and your overall symptoms. Over time patterns will emerge. On the other hand, alcohol typically acts as a trigger by virtue of its ability to create heat inside the body. Similar to the problem of exercise, this heat is not good for someone with rosacea. Drinking moderately or not at all is the best solution.
